Webinar Series: Part 1: Eyes on the Workforce: Strategies for Recruiting and Retaining a Thriving Eye Care Workforce at Community Health Centers

November 18, 2024 | 1:00 pm 2:00 pm

Access to vision and eye care remains one of the greatest unmet health needs in the United States. While community health centers are uniquely positioned to address improved access to these services, fewer than one-third of the approximately 1,400 nationwide provide any vision services, and in 2023, less than 3% of the 31.5 million patients accessed vision services. Unfortunately, many community health centers seeking to establish or expand eye clinics experience barriers recruiting eye care providers due to provider shortages and competition with other practice settings. Once hired, many early-career providers find themselves quickly thrust into a leadership role without the support they need to flourish. In this two-part webinar series, ACU will educate community health center leaders and optometrists about strategies to recruit and retain a thriving eye care workforce.

Nov. 18: 1-2 p.m. ET: Part 1 will equip community health center leaders with knowledge of optometry training programs and strategies to engage optometry schools in recruiting eye care providers. Attendees will learn how the New England College of Optometry (NECO) in Boston, MA, and Western University of Health Sciences College of Optometry in Pomona, CA, partner with community health centers, embed optometrists to provide crucial vision services to their patient populations, and train students. Attendees will also learn about key considerations regarding training, experience, and role expectations when hiring an optometrist.

This webinar series was made possible by the generous support of Centene.

Speakers:

  • Dr. Amy Moy, Director of Health Center Network, New England College of Optometry
  • Dr. Christine T. Pham, Assistant Professor, Western University of Health Sciences College of Optometry
