Come Learn How 11 Million People Receive Access to Primary Care

The Association of Clinicians for the Underserved, the American Academy of Family Physicians, the American College of Physicians, the National Association of Community Health Centers and the Physician Assistant Education Association invite you to a Congressional Briefing on the National Health Service Corps (NHSC). For the past 45 years, the NHSC has played a critical role in maintaining access to primary care in our nation’s most underserved communities. Today, over 11 million people rely on NHSC clinicians for their care. However, the demand for NHSC placements far exceeds the current capacity.
The NHSC was created more than 40 years ago to address access gaps in the United States’ health care system that leave many medically stranded, and unable to access the care needed to be healthy. The NHSC offers scholarships and loan repayments for providers who promise to serve in shortage areas of the country, including many rural, frontier, and low-income communities. In 2015, there were almost 59 million people living in primary care shortage areas, more than 47 million people living in dental shortages, and more than 97 million people living in mental health shortage areas. The NHSC is aimed at addressing these very issues.
In addition to discussing the program and its impact across the country, the briefing will also outline current law and proposed legislation impacting the NHSC.
