In this second edition of a virtual series from the ACU National Center for Workforce Development & Training, participants will learn to foster a positive culture through self-awareness, building trust, and creating a sense of staff satisfaction in four in-depth, interactive sessions in October 2025.

Director of ACU’s National Center for Workforce Development & Training

A national thought leader on health center workforce well-being, management, and executive strategy, April Lewis brings 15+ years of data and leadership experience to ACU’s National Center. Lewis is a passionate speaker, strategist, and consultant who has presented at hundreds of national, state, and health center-specific trainings through her A. Lewis Academy and formerly served as Director of Health Center Operations & HR Training at the National Association of Community Health Centers and Chief Executive Officer at Community Integrated Management Systems, an Independent Practice Association founded by 14 South Carolina health centers. Having developed the unique, proprietary Workwell System to equip healthcare managers and teams to achieve positive results in a matter of months, she is an authoritative voice for employee well-being and the broader workforce.

Session 1

Session 1: Foundations of Effective People Management

October 9: 2-3:30 p.m. ET

In this foundational session, participants will deepen their understanding of people management principles and their role in fostering a positive team environment. Managers will explore self-awareness by examining their identities, management styles, and how they influence team interactions. This session provides practical tools for building trust and authentic connections within multifaceted teams. Participants will also learn strategies to cultivate a sense of cooperation, ensuring all team members feel valued, supported, and empowered to contribute their best.

  • Explore areas of self-awareness, including understanding their default management styles and the implications of managing a multifaceted team.

Session 2

Managing with Strategic Vision and Clear Expectations

October 16: 2-3:30 p.m. ET

This session equips managers with the skills to lead their teams with clarity and purpose. Participants will learn how to craft a vision that aligns with the organizational strategic plan. The module will explore practical methods for communicating this vision, ensuring every team member understands and supports it. Additionally, managers will develop a collaborative approach to setting clear expectations and fostering a supportive environment where team members are engaged, aligned, and empowered to contribute to shared success.

Learning Outcomes: Participants Will

  • Envision the success of the team in alignment with organizational goals.
  • Determine the what and how of communicating a vision for team members to buy in.
  • Develop a process for making goal-setting collaborative and supportive.

Session 3

Establishing and Maintaining a Healthy Team Culture

October 23: 2-3:30 p.m. ET

In this session, participants will explore practical approaches to fostering a positive and resilient team culture. Managers will learn best practices for establishing consistent communication through group and one-on-one interactions. They will gain tools to create an environment where feedback is encouraged, and difficult conversations are approached constructively. Additionally, the module will focus on building positive spaces, empowering team members to reflect on their experiences, learn from mistakes, and contribute to a culture of continuous improvement.

Learning Outcomes: Participants Will

  • Understand best practices for establishing regular communication cadences in group and 1:1 settings.
  • Gain tools for building a culture of feedback and engaging in difficult conversations.

Investing in People and Performance Development

In this session, participants will learn essential strategies for fostering team growth and development. Through interactive exercises, managers will explore how to provide meaningful opportunities that empower team members to contribute in impactful ways. Participants will also practice delivering consistent, timely feedback that balances support with accountability. Additionally, the session will guide managers in defining personalized development plans that address short-term goals and long-term career growth, ensuring each team member can visualize organizational advancement.
